Juan Martínez, Founder of Ping Pong 129

Juan Martínez Gregorio, originally from Cartagena, Spain, is the innovative force behind Ping Pong 129, Hong Kong's premier Gin & Tonic bar, celebrated for its blend of style, atmospheric brilliance, and impeccable gin collection. Born in the warm coastal region of 'Costa Cálida', Juan boasts an eclectic academic background in Business and Administration from the Universidad de Murcia, having studied in diverse locations like Lubbock, Texas, and Lille, France. His cultural landscape was further broadened while he orchestrated cultural, music, and cinema programs in Annecy, France.

Juan’s multifaceted journey included immersion in the musical realms of Berlin before he made Hong Kong his home in 2008. Initially part of the corporate sector, specializing in marketing and events, his passion for cultural integration, music, and fine dining experiences converged in the establishment of Ping Pong 129 in 2014. Located in a former ping pong parlour, the bar introduced Hong Kong to the Spanish G&T trend, featuring a meticulously curated selection including classic brands like Gin Xoriguer and latest local creations like Two Moons and Perfume Trees.

Juan’s innovative approach to the bar extends beyond drink curation, with Ping Pong 129 serving as a cultural hotspot showcasing international and local artists, live music, and diverse exhibitions. This reflects his personal love for music, especially genres like ambient and leftfield electronic, and his passion for exploring global culinary landscapes.

Set to celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2024, Ping Pong 129 stands as a testament to Juan’s dedication to enriching Hong Kong’s cultural and culinary scenes. It melds his love for vibrant and alternative cities like Berlin, Detroit, and Kyoto, his fascination with the tranquil beauty of remote islands, and his deep-rooted connection to the sea. Whether savouring a Pomada from Menorca or visiting Yau Ma Tei Cinematheque, Juan’s essence is deeply ingrained in every facet of Ping Pong 129, marking it as a listed venue by HKTB and a genuine representation of his diverse, global journey.
